SUSTAIN VET Project

The Survival Skills for Trainers of Apprentices in Initial VET (SUSTAIN VET) Project was a two-year initiative carried out from October 2020 to September 2022. The project was funded under the KA2 Strategic Partnerships in the field of Vocational Education and Training (VET) as part of the Erasmus+ Programme.

The SUSTAIN VET project aimed to support company mentors in effectively planning, designing, delivering, and assessing IVET apprenticeship schemes. A central feature of the project was the introduction of a didactical approach known as Situation-based Didactics, which served as the basis for designing company syllabi and organizing mentorship. This approach emphasizes situated knowledge, which activates spontaneously and serves as the gateway to other types of knowledge. By linking practical experience with theory, this method ensures that Work-Based Learning (WBL) is optimally aligned with labor market needs.

To address the needs of the project’s target groups—trainers of company mentors and company mentors of apprentices—the SUSTAIN VET project developed innovative intellectual outputs. These outputs are designed to enhance the skills and competencies of the target groups, providing them with user-friendly tools for planning, designing, and executing training syllabi, monitoring apprentices’ progress, and delivering constructive feedback.

Key Outputs:

  • Proficiency Train-the-Trainer Programme: This program is designed to empower trainers of company mentors by equipping them with essential competencies related to WBL. It includes guidance on training company mentors in designing training syllabi aligned with school-based training, establishing assessment procedures for apprentices’ progress, communicating effectively with VET providers, and providing relevant feedback and training to mentors.
The Ultimate Company Mentor Survival Toolkit: This comprehensive toolkit serves as a reference for company mentors of apprentices, offering detailed guidelines on rights and obligations within WBL, applicable legislation, templates, and procedures such as monitoring and feedback
  • These key outputs are available in multiple languages, including English, Bulgarian, Macedonian, Spanish, Lithuanian, and Albanian, ensuring accessibility for a broad audience across different regions.
  • The Modern Education Foundation played a pivotal role in the successful implementation of the SUSTAIN VET project. Our team members were actively involved at every stage, from the initial planning to the final execution, ensuring that the project’s objectives were met with precision and impact. This collaboration has further solidified our commitment to enhancing vocational education and training in Bulgaria and beyond.
